"Branching" Out

By Joan Wagner
(reproduced from ISA Today January 2003)

ISA is working in conjunction with the Athens Environmental Foundation and the World Olympian Association to make the world a little greener to celebrate the upcoming 2004 Olympics in Athens, Greece. The Olive Branch Project will work to plant trees along the Olympic torch route to create a “green highway.” The route traditionally begins in Greece and travels to the host city. Since this year’s Olympics will be held in Greece, the route will traverse the five major continents, beginning in Olympia and ending in Athens, said Tony Diamantidis, executive director of the Athens Environmental Foundation. This will be this first year the torch run will pass through Africa. Diamantidis said there will be a celebration for the tree planting in each major city the route passes through. It is too early to estimate exactly how many trees will be planted, but Diamantidis said he expects thousands to be planted, depending on how active supporters are.

The Olive Branch Project helps support the environmental pillar of the Olympic charter, which was added to the existing pillars—sport and culture—in 1994. ISA Associate Executive Director Jim Skiera said ISA saw the Olive Branch Project “as an opportunity to be a part of something that was a project of global significance” and an opportunity for international members to participate in an ISA
project, most of which have been held in North America in past years. “It opened up another outlet for us to promote the benefits of trees and tree care,” Skiera said. “It was an opportunity to preach outside the church.”

Skiera said ISA members will provide technical tree planting support and will participate in environmental educational programs along the torch route. For more information, contact Jim Skiera or visit www.isa-arbor.com.

For ISA members the ISA has also redesigned it's website and it is worth a look.
